class.upload.php is a powerful and mature PHP class to manage uploaded files, and manipulate images in many ways. The script is available under a GPL license.

In fact, the class uses imagestring to write text. In a future version, the class will use imagettftext which will offer more features. I don't have enough time right now to do it.
