class.upload.php is a powerful and mature PHP class to manage uploaded files, and manipulate images in many ways. The script is available under a GPL license.

I haven't tried this, but expected that it'd work because it's a two step process (which I wanted to avoid). I'll wait for Colin to finish his investigations before I commit to a 2 step process.
